Danick Caelen
Kamer.13 is an initiative of the Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof, made possible by the Friends of the Fotomuseum Foundation. In Room 13, local photographers exhibit 13 photos to showcase the talent in the region to our visitors. These exhibitions last from 6 to 8 weeks and provide a varied addition to our regular exhibitions. On view from September 8: Danick Caelen.
Danick about his project:
My name is Danick Caelen (20), a street photographer from Maastricht. In the summer of 2023, I went to Paris with school.
A city I had been to once before and loved then, although this time I got to see a completely different side. We all know it as the beautiful romanticized city of love, but there is much more to the real situation of many residents of this city than the image that the media presents to us.
Once we had been photographing in the city for a few hours, I quickly noticed how much homelessness there actually is. It was so remarkably common that I immediately decided to make a series about it, to draw more attention to the situation of these people.
Some images say more than 1000 words and I wanted to capture that, whether it is a face or a photo that symbolizes something.
Personally, I am not really into taking photos of the perfect picture, I like to walk the streets with my camera and look for interesting subjects, whoever or whatever they may be.
Walking the same route through Maastricht or wherever, again and again, always coming back with completely different results. Capturing the sincere emotions of people and moments that allow you to connect a story to a subject in a photo, that is what I strive for.
I want to show the emotions of people who are less fortunate, I would rather photograph a tear than a smile to be able to tell a story with it.
